Trauma Assessments

A comprehensive trauma assessment is an in-depth assessment of the impact of trauma a child/adult has experienced, how the trauma impacts the relationship with the child's caregivers, the adult and their relationships with others, the individual's functioning, and recommendations for services or community supports for the child/ adult/ family/caregivers to heal and be successful.

The purpose of assessment is to obtain clinical recommendations to guide Clinicians in developing case plans to assist the child/ adult with addressing identified trauma, behaviors, and diagnoses that meet clinical criteria. These assessments are not intended to answer best interest decisions (such as permanency, parenting time, or placement).

A combination of assessment tools, scoring measures, family history, interviews, medical, court documentation, and behavior evaluations will be used to determine trauma exposure.

PTSD

Do you experience poor concentration or confusion or feel easily overwhelmed?

Do you suffer from trauma-related scars, nightmares, or flashbacks?

Do you avoid situations or reminders of the traumatic event?

Are you suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, or depression?

Trauma therapy combines different approaches and techniques to help lessen, even eliminate, the painful mental and physical responses raised by the memory of traumatic events and seeks to create new healthier patterns in your brain.

In trauma therapy, I work with you toward lessening, even extinguishing, the pain. It is my goal to identify the source and triggers for your emotional and physical suffering, to discuss ways to deal with unhelpful and unhealthy thoughts and behaviors, and to teach you techniques to manage distress and enable you to move forward.

Depression & Bi-Polar Disorder

Depression and Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that causes changes in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. Depression can be managed with a change in diet, exercise, fulfillment in life and establishing one’s identity.

Bipolar disorder symptoms commonly improve with treatment. Medication is the cornerstone of bipolar disorder treatment, though talk therapy (psychotherapy) can help many patients learn about their illness and adhere to medications, preventing future mood episodes.

Medications known as “mood stabilizers” (e.g., lithium) are the most commonly prescribed type of medications for bipolar disorder. These medications are believed to correct imbalanced brain signaling. Because bipolar disorder is a chronic illness in which mood episodes typically recur, ongoing preventive treatment is recommended.

Bipolar disorder treatment is individualized; people with bipolar disorder may need to try different medications before finding what works best for them.

Anxiety

Anxiety disorders differ from normal feelings of nervousness or anxiousness and involve excessive fear or anxiety. Anxiety disorders can cause one to avoid situations that trigger or worsen their symptoms. Job performance, schoolwork and personal relationships can be affected. However, anxiety disorders are treatable with a number of psychotherapeutic treatments.

There are several types of anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, specific phobias, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, and selective mutism.

Our Anxiety Treatment services provide a holistic approach to managing anxiety, combining the use of art therapy, mindfulness, journaling, cognitive restructuring, and exposure to the anxious trigger to help individuals gain control over their emotions and reactions. Our goal is to empower individuals to develop the skills and resources needed to manage their anxiety and lead a more fulfilling life.

Clinical Supervision

Clinical supervision is a mutual endeavor enhanced by a trusting bi-directional relationship that leads to professional development and enhanced client care through mentoring, guidance, and clinical oversight. As a central learning experience, it becomes a process of conceptualized growth, and when practical, it involves much more than monitoring a social worker's work.

Supervisors are tasked with carefully monitoring the services provided by Clinicians to seek assurance that service delivery maximizes each treatment opportunity. However, the downside of such monitoring presents a risk of minimizing the supervisory relationship and professional growth of the supervisee. The supervisor's role must expand, and many find themselves ill-equipped to deal with the many demands placed on them. For those benefitting from supervision, a significant learning experience can result – no matter where they lie on the continuum of professional development.

As one strives for professional growth as a counselor, adequate clinical supervision is a significant component of such progress. Such ongoing development, of course, is not only expected of entry-level counselors but of advanced clinicians as well. Clinical supervision involves professional guidance from an experienced teacher or mentor who transmits knowledge to broaden the supervisee's perspective. A significant goal of supervision is to equip the counselor to "self-supervise."  (Corey, Haynes, Moulton, & Muratori, 2010).
